My project, Lol Is Short for Laurence, began when my dad first disclosed that he had been having health problems. Suddenly aware of his mortality, I felt an urgency to spend more time with him and find out more about his life.
As the project developed, I became interested in ideas about perception, as put forward by John Berger and Jacques Lacan. This changed the aim of my work from being a documentation of my dad, into a project that explores how different people can perceive the same person in varying ways. The final body of work comprises photographs that I have taken of Laurence, as well as his own selfies and archival images, providing the viewer with multiple lenses through which to view the protagonist.
